Knight's fees

Knight’s fees refer to the financial obligations or payments a knight owed for their military service during medieval times. When someone became a knight, they often held land (called a fee or fief), which generated income. In return for this land and the duties associated with it, the knight was expected to serve a lord militarily when called upon. These fees were a way of formalizing the arrangement, linking land ownership with the duty to provide military support. Over time, the concept of knights' fees evolved into a more structured system of landholding and service within feudal society.
