Kidney Paired Donation (KPD)
Kidney Paired Donation (KPD) is a process that helps transplant patients receive a compatible kidney when direct donation isn’t possible. If a patient has a willing donor but blood or tissue types don’t match, they can swap kidneys with another pair in similar situations. For example, Donor A’s kidney might go to Recipient B, while Donor B’s kidney goes to Recipient A. This exchange increases the chances of a successful transplant by finding compatible matches that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise. KPD expands access to transplants and can save more lives by optimizing donor-recipient compatibility.
