Khumbu Icefall
The Khumbu Icefall is a heavily crevassed and constantly shifting glacier on Mount Everest’s route, located below the summit. It resembles a frozen, shifting river of ice that is broken into towering ice seracs, deep crevasses, and moving ice blocks. Climbers navigate this area using ladders, ropes, and careful teamwork, as the icefall’s unpredictable movement can cause avalanches or falling ice. It serves as a challenging, perilous passage on the ascent to Everest's higher elevations, requiring skill, caution, and experience to cross safely.
