Khmer Republic

The Khmer Republic was a government in Cambodia from 1970 to 1975, established after a military coup overthrew Prince Norodom Sihanouk. Led by General Lon Nol, it aimed to modernize the country and fight communist insurgents from the Khmer Rouge. However, it faced internal conflict, corruption, and widespread instability, and ultimately failed to maintain control, leading to the rise of the Khmer Rouge and the country's takeover in 1975. The Khmer Republic's existence was marked by the Cold War struggles in Southeast Asia and efforts to prevent communist expansion.
