Kenyan Independence Movement

The Kenyan Independence Movement was a fight by Kenyans to gain freedom from British colonial rule, which began in the early 20th century. Through protests, political activism, and organization of groups like the Kenya African Union, Kenyans sought self-governance and to end racial discrimination. Key figures, such as Jomo Kenyatta, emerged as leaders advocating for national sovereignty. The movement culminated in Kenya gaining independence on December 12, 1963, allowing Kenyans to govern themselves and establish their own government after decades of colonial control.
