Kent State University protests

The Kent State University protests in 1970 occurred during widespread opposition to the Vietnam War. Students demonstrated against the U.S. government's decision to expand the war into Cambodia, fearing escalation and loss of life. Tensions escalated when the Ohio National Guard was called to disperse the protests. On May 4, 1970, Guardsmen fired into a crowd, killing four students and injuring nine others. The incident highlighted deep national divisions over the war, sparking widespread outrage and increasing activism on college campuses across the U.S. It remains a significant symbol of student opposition to governmental policies and the cost of protest.
