Kartagener syndrome
Kartagener syndrome is a rare genetic disorder where tiny hair-like structures called cilia, which help move mucus and fluids in the body, don’t function properly. This can cause mucus buildup in the lungs, leading to frequent infections, and problems with the sinuses and ears. It also often results in organs being abnormally arranged in the chest and abdomen, a condition called situs inversus, where organs are mirrored from their normal positions. Overall, it affects respiratory health and body organization, and is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner, meaning a person needs to inherit the faulty gene from both parents.
