Karenia brevis (Red Tide)

Karenia brevis, commonly called red tide, is a microscopic algae found in coastal waters. Under certain conditions, it multiplies rapidly, turning the water a reddish-brown color. While it’s naturally occurring, excessive blooms can produce toxins harmful to marine life, humans, and pets. These toxins can cause breathing problems, skin irritation, and fish kills. Red tides are often linked to nutrient pollution from agriculture and wastewater runoff. Though they typically fade as conditions change, they highlight the importance of managing coastal pollution and monitoring water quality to protect ecosystems and public health.
