Karagöz (shadow play)

Karagöz is a traditional Turkish shadow puppet theatre that uses flat, cut-out figures puppeteered against a lit screen to create shadow images. The performer, known as the puppeteer (or "meister"), manipulates these figures to dramatize stories, often humorous or satirical, reflecting cultural themes. The dialogue is performed with voice-overs, and the figures’ movements bring characters and scenes to life. Originating in the Ottoman Empire, Karagöz is both entertainment and social commentary, blending storytelling, comedy, and artistry, and remains a significant cultural heritage in Turkey and surrounding regions.
