Kappel War

The Kappel War (1529–1531) was a conflict between Swiss Protestant and Catholic cantons over religious differences following the Reformation. Tensions grew as Protestant cities sought independence from Catholic control, leading to armed clashes. The war concluded with the Treaty of Kappel, which temporarily maintained religious peace by allowing each canton to choose its own faith but did not resolve underlying conflicts. This period marked a significant moment in Switzerland’s path toward religious tolerance and regional autonomy.
