Kandyan Kingdom
The Kandyan Kingdom was an independent monarchy in central Sri Lanka that existed from the late 16th century until 1815. It was known for its resistance against Portuguese, Dutch, and British colonial powers, maintaining local traditions, culture, and sovereignty. The kingdom was ruled by a king and had a unique system of governance, with strong religious influences from Buddhism. Its strategic location allowed it to act as a buffer zone, preserving Sri Lankan identity. The Kandyan Kingdom ultimately fell to British colonial conquest in 1815, becoming part of British Ceylon, but its cultural legacy remains significant today.
