Kafirstan (historical region)

Kafiristan was a historical region located on the northeastern border of Afghanistan, known for its mountainous terrain and distinct cultural identity. Historically inhabited by the Nuristani people, it was called "Land of the Infidels" (Kafiristan) by neighboring Muslims due to their polytheistic beliefs. In the late 19th century, it was forcibly converted to Islam and renamed Nuristan, meaning "Land of the Enlightened." The region is characterized by rugged landscapes, traditional practices, and a rich cultural heritage. It played a significant role in regional history, balancing local traditions with broader Central Asian influences.
