Kafiristanis
Kafiristanis are the ethnolinguistic groups native to the Kafiristan region in northeastern Afghanistan. Historically, they practiced polytheism before many converted to Islam in the late 19th or early 20th centuries. Their culture includes unique customs, languages, and traditions distinct from surrounding communities. In 1896, the area was renamed Nuristan ("Land of Light") following their conversion, leading to changes in religious and social practices. Today, the Kafiristanis are recognized for their rich cultural heritage, including distinctive festivals, rituals, and folklore, which reflect their historical resistance and cultural identity amidst broader Afghan society.
