Kafiristan (historical name for the region)

Kafiristan was a historical region located in northeastern Afghanistan, known for its remote and rugged terrain. It was inhabited by indigenous peoples called Kafirs, who practiced unique pagan religions, distinct from surrounding Muslim communities. The area was culturally isolated until the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when it was gradually integrated into Afghanistan. In 1978, the Afghan government officially renamed it Nuristan ("Land of Light") to reflect Islamic influence and convert the local population from their traditional beliefs. Today, Nuristan remains a remote, mountainous region with rich cultural history, showcasing a blending of ancient traditions and modern Afghan influences.
