K-index

The K-index is a measure used by scientists to describe the activity level of Earth's geomagnetic field caused by solar wind and solar storms. It indicates how disturbed the Earth's magnetic environment is over a short period, typically ranging from 0 (quiet conditions) to 9 (highly active). A higher K-index suggests increased geomagnetic activity, which can lead to phenomena like northern and southern lights, and may disrupt satellite and radio communications. It helps space weather researchers monitor and predict space environment conditions that can affect technology and infrastructure on Earth.
