K-278 Komsomolets
K-278 Komsomolets was a Soviet nuclear-powered submarine launched in 1983, equipped with nuclear reactors and torpedoes. It was designed for deep-sea operations and strategic patrols. In 1989, it suffered a tragic fire on board, leading to the loss of 42 crew members. Later, in 2000, the submarine sank in the Barents Sea after problems with its nuclear reactors, resulting in radioactive contamination. Today, the wreck remains on the seabed, serving as a site of environmental concern due to residual radiation, and is monitored to prevent further ecological impact.
