Jules Rimet Trophy
The Jules Rimet Trophy was the original trophy awarded to the World Cup champion in football (soccer). Named after Jules Rimet, the FIFA president who organized the tournament, it was first awarded in 1930. Made of gold-plated sterling silver and shaped like a Greek-style urn, the trophy was awarded to the winning team until 1970. After Brazil’s third win in 1970, they gained permanent possession of the trophy. The original Jules Rimet Trophy was stolen in 1983 and has never been recovered. It has since been replaced by a different trophy, the FIFA World Cup Trophy.
