Joseph Colombo was an influential American mafia figure, born in 1923, known for leading the Colombo crime family, one of New York City’s most powerful organized crime groups. He rose to prominence in the 1960s, expanding the family's influence through both criminal enterprises and community activities. In 1971, he founded the Italian-American Civil Rights League to promote Italian-American interests and combat negative stereotypes. His leadership was notable for efforts to forge alliances and modernize the organization. Colombo was shot and wounded in 1971, limiting his active role in crime, and he died in 1978.
