Joseon policy of isolation
The Joseon Dynasty’s policy of isolation aimed to limit foreign contact to protect its culture, security, and stability. It restricted trade, diplomatic relations, and cultural exchanges mainly to nearby countries like China and Japan, while preventing widespread foreign influence. This approach helped preserve traditional Korean values and avoid conflicts, but also limited technological and scientific progress. The policy was maintained for centuries, especially during the 17th to 19th centuries, making Joseon a relatively self-sufficient society that prioritized internal stability over international engagement.
