José María Pacheco
José María Pacheco was a 16th-century Spanish lawyer and political leader from Granada. He is best known for leading a revolt against the Spanish Crown during the Revolt of the Alpujarras (1568-1571), a rebellion by Moorish inhabitants demanding religious and cultural rights. Pacheco played a key role in organizing resistance, aligning local notables, and defending Moorish traditions. Although ultimately suppressed, his leadership symbolized the broader struggle of Granada’s Muslim population to preserve their identity during a period of religious and political upheaval in Spain.
