José María Morelos (1765–1815) was a Mexican Catholic priest and revolutionary leader who played a key role in Mexico's fight for independence from Spain. After Miguel Hidalgo’s death, Morelos took leadership of the insurgent movement, organizing armies, drafting important documents like the "Sentiments of the Nation," and advocating for social and political reforms such as ending slavery and establishing equality. His strategic skills and dedication made him a prominent figure in Mexico’s independence struggle. Ultimately, he was captured and executed in 1815, but his efforts significantly contributed to Mexico’s eventual independence.
