Joik

Joik is a traditional form of singing from the Sami people of northern Scandinavia and Russia’s Arctic region. It is a unique vocal art that involves melodic chanting or singing, often imitating sounds from nature, animals, or personal experiences. Unlike conventional song structures, joiks are deeply expressive, personal, and rely on specific melodies that can be repeated or varied. Historically, joiking served to preserve stories, memories, and cultural identity within Sami communities. Today, it remains a vital cultural expression, blending traditional practices with contemporary musical influences while maintaining its deep connection to Sami heritage.
