John Whitmer

John Whitmer was an early leader in the Mormon movement, born in 1802. He was a close associate of Joseph Smith, the founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served as one of the church's original Twelve Apostles. Known for his dedication and organizational skills, Whitmer helped publish early church texts and served as church historian. However, he later faced disagreements over church leadership and policies, leading to his excommunication in 1838. Despite this, he remains a significant figure in early Mormon history, contributing to the church’s development and documentation.
