John Simcoe
John Graves Simcoe was a British military officer and colonial administrator, best known as the founder of Toronto and the first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada (now Ontario) from 1791 to 1796. He played a significant role in shaping early Canadian development, promoting ideas like responsible government and encouraging settlement by promoting agriculture and education. Simcoe also worked to end the use of slavery in the region and sought to establish institutions and infrastructure that would support the growth of the new colony. His leadership helped lay the foundations for what would eventually become the province of Ontario.
