
John Mercer Langston
John Mercer Langston was a pioneering African American lawyer, educator, and political leader in the 19th century. Born in 1829, he was one of the first Black Americans to earn a law degree and become a college president. He dedicated his life to fighting for civil rights, education, and political equality for African Americans. Langston was also the first Black person elected to public office in Ohio and briefly served as a U.S. diplomat. His efforts helped pave the way for greater African American participation in government and society.
