John McAdam (Scottish Engineer)
John McAdam was a Scottish engineer and road-builder in the early 19th century, best known for pioneering the modern way of constructing durable roads. He developed a method called "macadamization," which involved layered packing of small stones, creating a stable and well-draining surface suitable for vehicles and pedestrians. This technique greatly improved road quality, safety, and maintenance, influencing road construction worldwide. McAdam’s approach marked a significant advancement from traditional dirt roads, facilitating more efficient transportation and commerce during the Industrial Revolution.
