John Eliot (1604–1690) was a pioneering English missionary known for his efforts to convert Native American tribes in New England. He learned local languages and created written versions of them, including an alphabet for the Massachusett language. Eliot translated the Bible and other religious texts, making Christianity accessible to Native Americans. His work helped foster cultural exchange and provided spiritual guidance, while also influencing early American religious and educational efforts. Eliot is often called the "Apostle to the Indians" for his dedication to understanding and serving Native communities through respectful communication and faith-based initiatives.
