John Demjanjuk

John Demjanjuk was a Ukrainian-born man who became widely known for allegations of involvement in Nazi atrocities during World War II. He was accused of being a Nazi guard, notably at the Treblinka extermination camp, and later faced legal proceedings in the United States and Germany. His case drew attention to issues of war crimes accountability and disputes over his identity, as he was initially believed to be a notorious guard called "Ivan the Terrible." Demjanjuk was eventually convicted in Germany in 2011 for serving as a guard at Sobibor extermination camp, but he was later found to be wrongly identified, and his legal plight remains complex and controversial.
