Johannes Brønsted
Johannes Brønsted was a Danish chemist known for his work on acids and bases. In 1923, he proposed a theory stating that acids are substances that donate protons (hydrogen ions, H⁺), while bases accept protons. This idea broadened the previous understanding and explained how acids and bases react with each other. His theory helps scientists predict and understand chemical reactions involving acids and bases more effectively. In essence, Brønsted's work provides a clear way to distinguish and describe substances based on their behavior in transfer of protons during reactions.
