JME
JME, or Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy, is a type of epilepsy that usually begins in adolescence. It causes sudden, brief muscle jerks (myoclonic seizures), often shortly after waking. Some people may also experience additional seizures like tonic-clonic (stiffening and jerking) or absence seizures. These seizures are linked to abnormal electrical activity in the brain. JME is typically lifelong, but it can often be effectively managed with medication. It’s important for individuals with JME to follow medical advice to control seizures and maintain safety, as well as to avoid known triggers such as lack of sleep or stress.
