Usman dan Fodio was a Islamic scholar and reformer in 19th-century West Africa. His jihad (religious struggle) aimed to restore authentic Islamic practices and promote justice by challenging corrupt local leaders and practices he saw as un-Islamic. He sought to create a community based on strict adherence to Islamic principles, emphasizing education, morality, and fairness. This movement led to the establishment of the Sokoto Caliphate, which became a powerful Islamic state in the region. His jihad was both a religious and social campaign to renew Islamic faith and improve society according to Islamic teachings.
