Jewish Alexandria
Jewish Alexandria was a vibrant Jewish community in the ancient city of Alexandria, Egypt, established around the 3rd century BCE. It was a major cultural and intellectual hub where Jewish scholars, especially the famous Philo of Alexandria, blended Jewish religious ideas with Greek philosophy. The community managed its own religious and communal affairs and contributed significantly to Jewish thought, literature, and the spread of Hebrew culture outside Israel. Despite periods of prosperity and hardship over centuries, Jewish Alexandria remained an influential center of Jewish learning and identity until the city’s Jewish population declined in the medieval period.
