Jeffersonian Republican Party

The Jeffersonian Republican Party, also known as the Democratic-Republican Party, was an early American political party founded by Thomas Jefferson and his allies in the early 1790s. It emphasized limited federal government, states' rights, agricultural interests, and individual freedoms. They opposed the Federalist Party’s push for a stronger central government and a more industrialized economy. The party shaped early American politics by advocating for a government that prioritized citizen liberty and decentralization, laying the groundwork for modern Democratic Party principles. It was dominant in the early 19th century but eventually evolved into the Democratic Party.
