Jefferson Davis (American Civil War figure)

Jefferson Davis was an American political leader who served as the President of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War (1861-1865). A former U.S. Senator and Secretary of War, he strongly supported states' rights and slavery. When Southern states seceded from the Union, Davis was elected to lead the Confederacy, which aimed to maintain slavery and independence. His leadership was marked by efforts to unify the Confederate war effort, but the Confederacy ultimately fell to Union forces. After the war, Davis was imprisoned briefly and later became a symbol of the Confederacy’s defiance.
