Jayuya Uprising
The Jayuya Uprising was an armed rebellion in October 1950 by Puerto Rican nationalists against U.S. authority and the Puerto Rican government. Led by Blanca Canales and others, the fighters aimed to achieve independence for Puerto Rico. They seized the town of Jayuya and took control briefly, symbolizing resistance to colonial rule. The U.S. government responded swiftly, bombing the area and restoring order. The uprising highlighted Puerto Rican nationalist frustrations with political status and colonial relationship, fostering increased activism and debate about independence versus statehood.
