Jat farmer protests

The Jat farmer protests in India began in 2020 as farmers, mainly from the Jat community, opposed new agricultural laws that they believed would reduce their crop prices and bargaining power. These laws aimed to liberalize the farming sector, allowing private companies to buy directly from farmers. Farmers feared this would lead to exploitation and decline in their income. The protests included large-scale demonstrations, mainly around Delhi, demanding the government repeal the laws. After prolonged negotiations and widespread support, the government eventually repealed the laws in late 2021. The protests highlighted farmers’ concerns about their livelihoods and government policies.
