Japan National Opera

The Japan National Opera (JNO) was Japan’s premier opera company, established in 1988 to promote opera artistry and cultural exchange. It aimed to perform a wide variety of operatic works, from classics to modern pieces, and develop local talent. In 2019, it merged with the New National Theatre's Opera Division to strengthen Japan’s operatic scene. The combined organization continues to produce high-quality productions, fostering appreciation for opera among Japanese audiences and contributing to the international cultural landscape. It plays a vital role in Japan’s performing arts, blending Western opera traditions with Japanese musical and theatrical elements.
