Janus-faced imperialism

Janus-faced imperialism refers to a form of overseas dominance that presents a dual image: outwardly, it appears as benevolent or protective, promoting stability, progress, or aid; inwardly, it often involves exploitation, control, and self-interest. This paradox reflects how imperial powers justified their expansion through ideals of civilization or benefit, while simultaneously pursuing economic or strategic gains that may harm the colonized regions. Essentially, it highlights the double nature of imperialism’s intentions and impacts—both appearing generous and imperialistic at once.
