Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation

The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, enacted in August 2019, divided the former state of Jammu and Kashmir into two separate Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. This reorganization aimed to improve administrative efficiency, promote regional development, and integrate the region more closely with the Indian Union. Jammu and Kashmir retained a legislative assembly, while Ladakh became a union territory without one. The move also intended to streamline governance and address issues related to militancy and insurgency, though it also sparked political and regional debates over autonomy and regional identity.
