Jameson Raid

The Jameson Raid was an 1895-1896 covert military attack by British forces led by Leander Starr Jameson against the South African Republic (Transvaal). It aimed to incite an uprising of mainly gold-mining (Uitlander) workers against the Boer government, with the goal of destabilizing the republic and increasing British influence. The raid failed, leading to diplomatic tensions between Britain and the Transvaal, and contributed to rising conflicts that eventually led to the Second Boer War. It is often seen as an early example of imperialistic intervention in southern Africa.
