James II (King of England)

James II of England was king from 1685 to 1688, known for his strong Catholic beliefs during a predominantly Protestant England. His attempts to promote religious tolerance and his efforts to increase royal authority sparked fears among Protestants and Parliament. His policies led to unrest, and his perceived absolutism prompted fears of a return to Catholic dominance. Ultimately, his reign ended when he was overthrown in the Glorious Revolution, replaced by William and Mary, marking a shift toward constitutional monarchy and parliamentary power in England.
