Jabez Stone

Jabez Stone is a fictional character from the short story "The Devil and Daniel Webster" by Stephen Vincent Benét. He is a humble New Hampshire farmer who, feeling desperate for success, makes a deal with the devil (referred to as "Old Scratch") for seven years of prosperity. When the time ends and he tries to break free, the devil claims his soul. Jabez then seeks help from the renowned lawyer Daniel Webster to defend his soul in a supernatural court, leading to a dramatic confrontation that explores themes of temptation, integrity, and the value of a moral life.
