Jōdō Shinshū

Jōdō Shinshū, or True Pure Land Buddhism, is a Japanese school founded by Honen in the 12th century. It emphasizes devotion to Amida Buddha, who is believed to have the power to grant salvation and rebirth in the Pure Land—a blissful, enlightened realm—through sincere recitation of the nembutsu ("Namu Amida Butsu"). Unlike other Buddhist traditions that focus on meditation or strict practices, Jōdō Shinshū teaches that salvation is accessible to all through faith and reliance on Amida’s vow, making it a popular and accessible path aimed at achieving enlightenment in the next life.
