Itza People
The Itza People are a Maya-speaking indigenous group originally from the northern Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico and parts of Central America. Historically, they were prominent in the late post-classic period, known for their powerful city of Nojpetén, which was the last independent Maya kingdom until the 17th century. Today, many Itza descendants maintain their cultural traditions, language, and identity, despite challenges from historical colonization. They are recognized for their rich heritage, including traditional rituals, crafts, and ongoing efforts to preserve their language and ancestral practices.
