Italian War of Independence

The Italian War of Independence, fought between 1848-1849 and 1859-1861, was a series of military campaigns aimed at unifying Italy from various regions controlled by Austria and other foreign powers. Key Italian states sought independence and unification, often with support from France and other allies. The wars resulted in significant territorial gains, notably the annexation of Lombardy and central Italy into the Kingdom of Sardinia, paving the way for the eventual creation of a unified Italy in 1861. These conflicts were driven by nationalist aspirations for a unified Italian nation-state free from foreign domination.
