Isopoda

Isopoda are a group of crustaceans that include a wide variety of marine, freshwater, and terrestrial species. They have a flattened, segmented body with numerous legs, typically around 14, used for walking and climbing. Isopods range from tiny planktonic forms to large terrestrial ones like pillbugs or woodlice, which are common in moist environments. They play important roles in ecosystems as scavengers and decomposers, breaking down organic material. Despite their diversity, all isopods share a similar body plan and are distinguished by their rigid exoskeleton and jointed limbs, making them a unique and ecologically significant group within the crustacean family.
