In psychology, isolation refers to a defense mechanism where an individual distances themselves emotionally or mentally from certain thoughts, feelings, or experiences to reduce anxiety or distress. This process allows a person to avoid confronting difficult emotions or memories by separating them from conscious awareness, often making it easier to function temporarily. While it can be a way to cope with overwhelming situations, excessive or chronic isolation may hinder emotional processing and healing. It serves as an unconscious strategy to manage internal conflicts, but addressing the underlying issues is typically necessary for long-term well-being.
