Islet Cell Transplant
Islet cell transplantation is a medical procedure aimed at treating certain cases of severe type 1 diabetes. It involves isolating insulin-producing cells (islet cells) from a donor pancreas and transplanting them into the patient's liver. These transplanted cells can then produce insulin naturally, helping to regulate blood sugar levels and reduce the need for external insulin injections. The procedure is complex and may require immunosuppressive drugs to prevent rejection. While not a cure, it offers the potential to improve quality of life for some patients by better managing their blood glucose.
