Islamic State of Iraq

The Islamic State of Iraq (ISI) was a jihadist militant organization established in 2006, mainly comprising Sunni extremists aiming to create an Islamic state in Iraq. It evolved from earlier insurgent groups opposing U.S. occupation and Iraqi government forces. ISI sought to establish strict Islamic governance through violent means, including attacks on civilians, security forces, and infrastructure. It played a significant role in Iraq's conflict, and in 2013, it declared itself part of a broader jihadist movement known as ISIS or ISIL, expanding into Syria and capturing large territories before losing control later.
