Isidore of Seville (c. 560–636) was a prominent Spanish scholar and bishop known for his extensive writings that sought to compile and summarize knowledge of his time. His most notable work, the "Etymologies," is an encyclopedic text that covers a wide range of subjects, including history, literature, grammar, and science, making it one of the first encyclopedias in history. Isidore’s efforts to preserve and disseminate knowledge were crucial during the early Middle Ages, and he is often regarded as a significant figure in the development of education and scholarship in Europe. He was later declared a Doctor of the Church.
